- As the women’s stories emerge, what examples of suffering do we see?
The way the women are treated by the white people such as
not being able to walk through others properties because they’re black, being
beaten and threatened if they break the Jim Crowe laws (eg. Using white
toilets), called names and their living standards such as three kids sharing a
bed and sometimes not having enough food.
2.
How
did the women respond to this? Give some examples.
The women such as Abilene took it and did as they were told
and moved on but some such as Minnie would get angry and sometimes pull revenge
acts such as the poo in the pie. Eventually they all told their stories to
Skeeter but were still scared of getting caught.
3.
What
part did their Christian faith play?
They put their heads down and did as they were told and so
somehow believed that their situations would one day get better. They all stuck
together and in a way forgave the white people for what they do to the black
people. Apart from few who took revenge acts, many did not respond negatively
to the way they were treated.
4.
How
did you respond to the issues raised in the move?
I had learned this topic before yet it’s different when it’s
someone else’s story as it becomes more believable. It made it easier for me to
relate to Skeeter, as she was a white person who really believed in what was
right making the other white people seem even worse so that it really created a
divide between ‘good and bad’. It still seems really unbelievable to see how
they were treated.
